The Barons once again put themselves in a position to win on Friday night but as was the story of the series Spruce Grove capitalized on their chances.

After being out played for 40 minutes and having Steven Legatto steal the show the Barons were down 1-0 heading into the 3rd.

Once again the MOB dominated the 3rd period and managed to tie the game at 1 just past the midway point of the period.

The Barons continued to press and you could feel that they were going to force a game 6.

Dave Carr had a glorious chance with the puck sitting at the edge of the crease and a wide open net but the pucked rolled as he went to fire it home and the shot ended up going over the crossbar…less than a minute later the Saints had one of their few chances in the 3rd and rookie David Glen beat Steven Legatto along the ice, between the legs with a wrist shot from about 40 feet out. Saints took the lead with 2:04 to go and would add an empty netter to seal the win.

The goal on Lego is once that he certainly would have liked back considering it looked like it was going to be one of his easier saves of the night….however if you look at it the other way Lego was the only reason the Barons were even in the game…so you can’t really put the blame on him.

Spruce Grove deserved to win this series but you have to give the MOB credit….they were tied in Game 4 with 15 seconds left and they were tied in Game 5 with 2:04 left…..a bounce here or there in the final two games and MOB could be leading the series 3-2 right now.

It’s back to the drawing board for the MOB now while the Saints move on.

Should point out that I think the Saints will need to play better if they want to advance another round. Spruce’s top guns were not impressive in the series and I would say that their goaltending was a little suspect at times….if they are going to beat the other elite teams in the league their best players need to be their best players….don’t get me wrong Colton Yaremovich, Tyler Barr and Bryce Van Brabant were great in this series…but those aren’t the guys that will win you a league title let alone a national championship.

Congrats to the Barons on making it further in the post-season than many expected.

I’ll have more post-season reaction from the Barons over the next couple of days.

And also check back for my Top Ten Goal Calls of the year.
